Hiroshima, Japan: It`s The Little Things That Give it Life

Hiroshima, Japan is always near the top of my list of Japanese cities that I want to visit again. As you know, it has the unenviable position in history as the victim of the first atomic bomb used in World War II. But, thanks to its people, this amazing place managed to somehow survive. It not only survived, it florished!

Although the scars inflicted by the Hiroshima Bombing, both emotional and physical, are still present, as at the must see Peace Memorial Park, the city has an atmosphere and charm all its own. Take for example, its trams.

Yes, trams. You know, streetcars. I mean, it`s not everyday that you can ride one (unless of course your city has them) and the older trams, which actually come from all over Japan, definitely give the place a very cool, old school feel. However, in spite of my fondness for the home of Carp Castle and the variety of reasons that make it special, there is one unfortunate subject that needs to be addressed. Considering the history of Hiroshima, I think that its people have a lot of pride in their home as it stands today and deservedly so. But one area where their pride may just be misplaced is in their “Hiroshima style Okonomiyaki.”Having lived near Osaka for a long time, my preference in okonomiyaki styles lies there. That`s not to say that okonomiyaki from Hiroshima is disgusting, it`s not. It just isn`t, in my opinion, as good.

But then again the Hiroshimaites probably believe that Osaka Okonomiyaki is the style found wanting. Whichever the case may be, I`ll leave you to be the judge, then you will probably decide that I have no sense of taste what-so-ever. You won`t get any arguments from my wife on that one.

When planing your Hiroshima travel, with thoughts of Okonomiyaki running through your head, going on the anniversary of the atomic bombing, August 6th, as many do, may not be a great idea. Why not? One word: Humidity. Anywhere from October to about May is probably the best time to go.

Autumn and even winter are reasonably mild, and come spring, Japanese cherry blossom trees bloom to everyone`s delight. Well, without further ado let the tour begin.
