Miyajima Island and the Floating Itsukushima Shrine
Even if you are are unfamiliar with the Miyajima Island (officially called Itsukushima), you are probably familiar with the image of its famous "floating torii gate".
Known as Otorii (Grand Torii), it was constructed so that at high tide it would be surrounded by water. Needless to say, it is an impressive sight. Otorii is part of Itsukushima Shrine. ![]() Since Miyajima is very mountainous, has virgin forests, a number of ancient buildings (including a five story pagoda (Goju no To) which dates back to 1407), and wild deer and monkeys, the ancient scholar Shunsai Hayashi listed the island as one of Japan`s top three scenic spots. No doubt when you visit the island you'll think so too. ![]() Of course, during the day tourists flock to discover its beauty, but there are a couple of ways to experience not only its beauty but its tranquility as well. Most people that visit, only come during the day. If you stay overnight, the evening and early morning allow you to enjoy the serenity that must have been felt by those who lived there over a thousand years ago. ![]() The other way to get away from the crowds (at least on a weekday), is to hike up its highest mountain, Mount Misen. At 535 meters (1,755 feet) Mount Misen`s summit is the highest on Miyajima. The peak can be reached either on foot or via cable car (the more popular way) which takes you to within an approximately 20 minute walk of the top. Wild monkeys are to be found around the upper cable car station, and if you decide to hike you may run into the occasional wild deer as well. ![]() Once the summit is reached, there are some fantastic views to be had, not only of the forest covered Itsukushima itself but also of the Seto Inland sea and its other islands. ![]() The cable car costs 1800 yen per Adult for a round trip and 900 yen per Child. ![]() From December to February it runs from 9:00am to 16:30pm. March to October - 9:00 to 5:00pm. November - 8:00am to 5:00pm. Discover more about Itsukushima Shrine. Leave Miyajima and discover more about Hiroshima, Japan. |
