Susukino: Nightlife Never Tasted So Good.

Susukino is Sapporo`s nightlife area and is famous for its history as a red light district in Japan. Needles to say if some young lady walks up to you out of no where and starts up a conversation, it isn`t because she is lost or interested in your outstanding personality and fantastic looks. Flourishing with karaoke boxes, bars (quite a few catering to foreigners), and restaurants, it is becoming popular for its ramen noodles. Ramen Yokocho for example, is a narrow street which is home to only ramen shops. Now, and this is important, when in Sapporo, or even anywhere in Hokkaido, Japan for that matter, make sure you.... Try shio ramen. (salt flavored ramen, pronounced "she-o"). It is, in a word, sensational! (Obviously I have simple tastes).
When Defeated Eat Ramen!
The first time I ever tried shio ramen I was working at a pension (a Japanese bed and breakfast) and my boss took me out for lunch at this little ramen shop in our town of Niseko. Australia was playing Japan for baseball glory during the Sydney 2000 Olympics on T.V. It was only thanks to the delicious ramen that I was able to wash the taste of my home county`s defeat from my mouth. Ok, actually I couldn`t remember who won, I had to google it. But I do remember how amazing those noodles were, so if you are in Ramen Yokocho right now and reading this, do yourself a favor.... "she-o". In February, Susukino is also one of three sites for the Yuki Matsuri (Sapporo Snow Festival).
