Yokohama Tourist Information

Going to Yokohama Chinatown is like stepping into a world designed just for your taste buds. And if that weren`t enough, the sites and smells will surely draw you in.

Obviously located in Yokohama, Japan, Yokohama China Town is the largest of Japan`s few Chinatowns with hundreds of restaurants and stores.

If you`re into knowing what the future has in store for you, the area also has its fair share of fortune tellers.

Another major attraction is the 8 story Daska, a food theme park based on Shanghai of the 1920`s-30`s.

Yokohama`s Chinatown has a history dating back to 1859 when Yokohama Port was opened to foreign trade and Chinese immigrants chose to settle. However the town is no longer home to large number of residents, instead catering more to tourists who come seeking tasty treats.

In the middle of Chinatown is a temple dedicated to Kanwu, once a god of war he is now enshrined, somewhat ironically as the God of Business.

The bright colors of the temple are equaled only by those of the 10 Chinese gates called Pairo spread throughout the town.

In Japan, festivals are always held with full enthusiasm by those performing much to the delight of those who attend. Yokohama China town is no different. At the beginning of February when the Chinese New Year Festival is held, the town really comes alive. Fireworks, parades, dragons, lions and of course Chinese food all make for a fantastic time.
